Pokémon Go has the world in a tizzy as players scurry around their neighborhoods trying to capture the animated creatures on their smartphone. However, this real-life scavenger hunt has its downsides. We’ve been hearing an alarming number of stories about players lured by robbers using game components, car crashes from people playing the game while driving, or pedestrians not paying attention when crossing roadways and causing other cars to wreck.
DEKRA’s mission is to ensure safety on the road, at work, and at home, so we’ve devised some safety tips you can employ no matter where you are playing the game!
- DON’T PLAY AND DRIVE. This would seem to go without saying, but news reports are proving otherwise. All attention when driving should be focused on that one task. Do not distract yourself with anything on your phone, especially trying to capture an imaginary character in the middle of the road putting yourself and others at risk.
- BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS. Many businesses and homes are “Poké stops”, but may not even be aware that they are a part of the game. By walking onto a business lot or homeowner’s property, you may be trespassing, or worse – hurt badly! This news report details a robbery and carjacking of two men that were playing.
Overall, at the end of the day, it is just a game. Be careful out there and use common sense to keep you and your family safe on the road, at work, and at home!
